Is Die Casting Right For Your Product?

The die casting process is the fastest option available for producing exact, non-ferrous metal products. Because this method utilizes reusable molds, it offers high-speed production of parts and has the flexibility to create a wider range of shapes and sizes than other casting methods.

Die casting can be completely automated, and its reusable molds also make it an affordable option. This technique is used to manufacture commercial, consumer, and industrial products. Die casting is ideal for medium-sized parts with more complex structures.

FAQ's ABOUT DIE-CASTING SOLUTIONS

There are two primary die casting processes: cold-chamber and hot-chamber. Each process will yield different results, so a part’s size, shape, and metal type should all be considered when choosing between the two methods. Hot chamber casting is the more popular method and offers slightly higher production rates than cold chamber. Cold chamber die casting aims to minimize machine corrosion. These methods work best for metals with high melting temperatures, such as aluminum and aluminum alloys.

Both methods involve using a mold to form non-ferrous molten metal to create a part. The primary difference is how the molten metal goes into the mold. With pressure die casting, molten metal is forced into a mold under constant pressure until the metal solidifies. Gravity casting, like its name suggests, utilizes gravity to fill the mold from the bottom up with molten metal. Pressure die casting allows for greater production volume because the mold fills quickly. There is, however, extra cost involved in this process because it requires more complexity and automation to set up, so it’s not well suited for shorter runs.

There is a reason die casting is the most popular method of metal casting. It seems to have endless advantages. This method allows for high-speed production with automated runs for greater cost savings. It produces complex parts that are dimensionally stable and durable. Die cast parts have thinner walls and are lighter than those made with other casting methods, yet they still provide more strength. They also don’t require post-run machining or assembly like parts made using other casting methods.

Like any process, die casting is not perfect. It’s high die cost make it unsuitable for smaller runs. Extra caution must be taken to properly evacuate air from the die cavity; otherwise, it causes metal porosity. Also, certain metals are not well suited for die casting.

DIE CASTING MATERIALS & METAL ALLOYS

Redstone’s Manufacturing’s Die-casting services encompass three major material types – zinc, copper, and aluminum.

zinc die cast

Zinc
Die Casting

Zinc is a heavier metal that provides robust characteristics to die cast parts. It offers a unique combination of impact strength, resistance to catastrophic failure, and ductility, making it a good choice for a wide range of applications.

aluminum die cast

Aluminum
Die Casting

Aluminum is among the most popular metals used for die casting due to its ability to handle high temperatures while maintaining strength and lightweight. Aluminum die-casts are conductive and corrosion-resistant.

copper die cast

Copper
Die Casting

Copper is considered a specialty metal for die casting. Copper casted parts are prized for their high mechanical properties, resistance to wear, high hardness, and strength close to that of steel parts.
