Frequently asked questions

Don’t see your question? Request a quote and our engineering team will answer it.

What is simultaneous 5-axis machining?

Simultaneous 5-axis machining moves the cutting tool across all five axes at the same time, not sequentially. That lets the machine reach undercuts, compound angles, and contoured surfaces in a single setup that would otherwise require multiple fixturings on a 3-axis machine. The result is tighter overall tolerance, fewer re-fixture errors, and shorter cycle time for complex parts.

When does a part need 5-axis rather than 3 or 4-axis machining?

Parts with features on multiple faces, undercuts, or compound-angle surfaces are the strongest candidates. If achieving your drawing tolerance on a 3-axis machine requires two or more re-fixtures, 5-axis often reduces cost and tolerance risk. Our engineering team reviews your CAD at the feasibility stage and recommends the right axis strategy.

What tolerances can you hold?

Standard machined tolerance is ±0.005 inch, and we hold down to ±0.0005 inch on critical features verified by CMM. Achievable tolerance on a specific feature is confirmed against your drawing at the feasibility review.

What materials do you machine?

We machine aluminum, steel, stainless steel, titanium, and engineering plastics. If your part calls for a specific alloy or temper, our engineering team confirms the best fit at the feasibility review.

What are your standard lead times?

Standard production lead time is 4 to 8 weeks, with first-article timing confirmed at the quote stage. Rush programs can be reviewed case by case.

How do customs and delivery work?

We are the importer of record and manage customs clearance, then coordinate freight to your dock with tracking. Duties and freight are quoted up front so there is no surprise on the invoice.

What is the difference between simultaneous 5-axis and 3+2 machining?

Simultaneous 5-axis moves all five axes at once to follow contoured surfaces and compound angles in continuous motion. In 3+2 machining, also called positional 5-axis, the two rotary axes lock the part at a fixed angle and the tool cuts in three axes from that orientation. We use 3+2 to reach multiple faces in one setup and simultaneous motion where the geometry demands continuous tool contact, and we confirm the right approach at the feasibility review.

What surface finishes are available for 5-axis machined parts?

As-machined down to Ra 0.4 micrometers, plus secondary finishing including anodizing, powder coating, plating, passivation, black oxide, and bead blasting. Finish is selected against your part's service environment and cosmetic requirements at the quote stage.

How does 5-axis machining reduce production cost on complex parts?

The main saving comes from consolidating operations. A part that needs four or five re-fixtures on a 3-axis machine can often be finished in a single setup on a 5-axis machine, which means less labor, fewer fixtures, and less scrap from repositioning error. The higher machine rate is typically offset by lower total cost on geometrically complex parts, which we confirm against your drawing at the quote stage.

What design mistakes drive up 5-axis machining cost?

The most common mistake is over-specifying internal geometry. Tight radii, specific fillet sizes, and edge-break callouts added in CAD for aesthetics rather than function drive cost without benefit. Cutting tools can break edges and add radii that achieve the function, so unnecessary callouts force specialty tooling, slow feed rates, and additional setups. Redstone's engineers flag these issues during DFM review before quoting, so 5-axis CNC machining runs efficiently from the start.

How does Redstone inspect 5-axis machined parts?

Redstone uses a critical-to-quality approach. Every print is ballooned into an inspection template covering all dimensions, notes, and material. A second pass layers in past quality issues with similar parts, mating-part fit requirements, and specs the print does not call out. Critical dimensions get extra rigor and are reviewed with the production team before machining begins. Once process capability is established, interval-based checks replace 100% inspection.

Does Redstone protect design confidentiality?

Redstone adds a layer of confidentiality to every project. The facility producing the parts sees only Redstone as the customer. It does not know the end user, the industry, or the application. For sensitive projects, Redstone can split production across multiple facilities so no single one receives the full drawing set.
