Frequently asked questions

Don’t see your question? Request a quote and our engineering team will answer it.

What is cold chamber die casting?

A casting process where the metal is melted in a separate furnace, ladled into the shot sleeve, and forced into the die by a plunger at high pressure. The furnace stays apart from the machine because the high-melt metals cold-chamber casting handles, led by aluminum, run too hot to hold inside the casting unit.

Why is aluminum run in a cold chamber instead of a hot chamber?

Aluminum melts at a high temperature, so it is ladled into a cold-chamber machine rather than run through an integrated hot-chamber system. Cold-chamber casting also runs at higher injection pressure, which is what aluminum needs for dense, dimensionally stable parts. Hot-chamber casting suits low-melt metals like zinc.

What is the minimum order quantity?

500 units per cycle for aluminum die casting. $50,000 minimum program value. Volume programs only. Multi-year preferred.

What part sizes can Redstone run in cold chamber?

50 grams to 25 kilograms per piece on standard equipment. Larger castings up to 7,000 kg supported at select facilities on a per-program basis. Send your part envelope and Redstone confirms the right facility and tonnage class at the quoting stage.

Can Redstone re-source an existing cold chamber program from another supplier?

Yes. Send the existing tool drawings, PPAP package, and current supplier quote. Redstone assesses tool transfer feasibility, runs a parallel quote with the certified facilities, and projects landed-cost savings and lead-time impact before you commit. Existing tooling is often re-usable in Redstone equipment.
