Why is zinc a good metal for die casting?

Zinc has a low melting point, which allows hot-chamber casting with fast cycle times and minimal die wear. It offers high dimensional stability, good impact strength, and thin-wall capability, making it one of the most economical options for complex, high-volume die cast parts.

What is the difference between Zamak 3 and Zamak 5?

Zamak 3 is the most widely used zinc alloy, offering a balanced combination of strength, ductility, and castability at low cost. Zamak 5 adds approximately 1% copper, which increases tensile strength and hardness while adding some corrosion resistance. Our engineering team confirms the right alloy for your part at the feasibility review.

What is hot-chamber die casting?

In hot-chamber casting, the injection mechanism sits submerged in the molten zinc bath. The machine draws metal directly from the crucible and injects it into the die, supporting fast cycle times. Hot-chamber casting is well suited to zinc and other low-melting-point alloys.

Can zinc die castings be plated or coated?

Yes. Zinc accepts a wide range of finishes including electroplating, powder coating, bead blasting, and chromate conversion. It plates consistently and is a common choice when a cosmetic or functional surface finish is required.

What are your standard lead times?

Standard production lead time is 4 to 8 weeks, with tooling and first-article timing confirmed at the quote stage. Rush programs can be reviewed case by case.

Is there a minimum order?

Zinc die casting carries tooling cost, so it is built for recurring production rather than one-off parts. We will tell you at the quote stage whether your volume is a fit and recommend the most cost-effective process.

What are the advantages of zinc die casting compared to aluminum?

Zinc has a lower melting point than aluminum, so it runs in a faster hot-chamber process with longer tool life and lower die wear. Zinc holds tighter tolerances, casts thinner walls, and reproduces fine detail and complex geometries more readily, and it plates well for cosmetic parts. Aluminum is lighter and better when strength-to-weight is the priority. We confirm the right metal at the feasibility review.

Do you offer secondary machining and finishing on zinc castings?

Yes. Beyond casting, we provide in-house CNC machining for tight-tolerance features and threads, plus value-added finishing including electroplating, powder coating, bead blasting, and chromate conversion. This lets a zinc die cast part ship finished to your exact specifications from a single manufacturing partner.

Why is wall thickness so important in zinc die castings?

Inconsistent wall thickness is the most common design mistake in die castings. Non-uniform walls cause uneven fill and cooling, leading to porosity, sink marks, and warpage. Redstone reviews wall-thickness uniformity at the DFM stage, adds draft-angle guidance, and applies porosity controls such as degassing or vacuum impregnation.

How does Redstone prevent porosity in die castings?

Porosity is driven by wall-thickness variation, gating design, and alloy mismatch. Redstone addresses it with DFM review, process capability validation, and, where leak integrity matters, x-ray or leak testing in the control plan. Past escapes on similar parts are mapped onto new geometries to prevent recurrence.

What happens if a shipment fails inspection?

Redstone catches issues before parts ship. When something does fail, the response is structured: a full sort of the affected lot, containment of nonconforming inventory, root cause analysis, and permanent corrective action. Redstone guarantees the parts and will repair, replace, or refund.

How does the ordering process work?

Every customer starts with a discovery call that includes a Redstone engineer. After an NDA, Redstone collects drawings and returns a quote within days. On a new order, samples are built, air-shipped for approval, and submitted with a First Article Inspection Report. Production begins only after sample approval.
