Frequently asked questions

Don’t see your question? Request a quote and our engineering team will answer it.

Which aluminum grade should I use?

6061 for general structural housings, brackets, and heat sinks. 7075 when strength-to-weight is the constraint, including aerospace structures and load-bearing parts. 2024 or MIC-6 for fatigue-critical or flatness-critical parts. Send your model and Redstone confirms the grade at the feasibility review.

What is the difference between machined and die cast aluminum parts?

Machined parts are cut from solid billet or bar stock, so they hold tighter tolerances, take any geometry without tooling, and suit lower volumes and prototypes. Die casting forms parts in a mold under pressure, which is more economical at high volume but needs tooling up front. For high-volume net-shape parts, see the aluminum die casting page. For tight-tolerance or lower-volume work, machining is the better fit.

What tolerances can Redstone hold on aluminum?

0.001 inch standard on 3-axis and 4-axis machining. 0.0005 inch on 5-axis programs. Every shipment includes a CMM dimensional report against your approved drawing. Tighter tolerances are reviewed against the specific feature at the feasibility stage.

What finishes protect machined aluminum from corrosion?

Type II and Type III anodizing, chromate conversion, powder coat, and plating in nickel, chrome, or zinc. Bead blast for a uniform matte cosmetic finish. Redstone confirms the finish against your service environment at the quoting stage.

Can Redstone re-source an existing aluminum machining program from another supplier?

Yes. Send the existing part drawings, inspection history, and current supplier quote. Redstone assesses feasibility, runs a parallel quote with the certified facilities, and projects landed-cost savings and lead-time impact before you commit.
