Frequently asked questions

Don’t see your question? Request a quote and our engineering team will answer it.

What is progressive die stamping and when does it fit?

A progressive die is a single multi-station tool. The strip feeds through it, and each press stroke advances the strip and completes another station, so a finished part comes off every stroke. It fits the highest-volume runs, where the fixed tooling cost is spread across a very large quantity and the per-part cost is the lowest of any stamped option. Send your annual volume and Redstone confirms whether a progressive die or a single-station tool is the right fit at the feasibility review.

How is progressive die stamping different from regular metal stamping?

Single-station stamping runs one operation per press, so a part with several features moves through several tools or several hits. A progressive die builds the part across several stations in one tool in one pass, which holds feature position and removes handling between steps. Progressive tooling costs more up front and pays back at higher volume.

What materials and thicknesses can Redstone run on a progressive die?

Steel, stainless, and aluminum are standard, with brass and copper alloys on qualifying programs. 0.010 inch to 0.250 inch on standard tooling, with heavier gauges supported at select facilities. Send your material spec and gauge and Redstone confirms the facility and tonnage class at quoting.

What is the minimum order quantity?

Progressive die stamping is a very high-volume process. $50,000 minimum program value. Volume programs only. Multi-year preferred. For moderate volumes, Redstone runs the same part on a single-station tool or turret punch until the volume justifies a progressive die.

Can Redstone re-source an existing progressive die program from another supplier?

Yes. Send the existing die drawings, strip layout, PPAP package, and current supplier quote. Redstone assesses tool transfer feasibility, runs a parallel quote with the certified facilities, and projects landed-cost savings and lead-time impact before you commit. Existing tooling is often re-usable in Redstone equipment.
