Overview

42CrMo4 is an alloy steel valued for its strength and toughness, particularly when subjected to quenching and tempering processes. The material undergoes rapid cooling followed by reheating to optimize hardness and toughness. As a high-grade alloy steel, it combines chromium and molybdenum as primary alloying elements to achieve strength balanced with durability. The steel follows the DIN EN ISO 683-2 standard (formerly EN 10083-3).

Equivalent Materials

Comparable steel grades include AISI 4140, 42CD4 (AFNOR), 708M40 (B.S.), SS 2244, and SAE 4140H. These materials share similar chemical compositions and mechanical properties. However, all exhibit poor weldability and susceptibility to cracking, requiring preheating and post-weld heat treatment to prevent integrity issues.

Characteristics

This alloy demonstrates exceptional strength and toughness when properly heat-treated. The chromium and molybdenum content contributes to hardness and wear resistance. 42CrMo4 is known for its poor weldability due to the formation of hard, brittle structures in heat-affected zones during welding.

The quenching and tempering process enhances hardness, impact toughness, and fatigue strength under dynamic loading. The material exhibits excellent machinability due to uniform hardness and microstructural stability. Chromium content provides corrosion resistance through passivation layer formation on surfaces.

Uses

The steel is widely employed in compressors, turbines, heavy machinery, and agricultural equipment. Applications span automotive, aerospace, and manufacturing sectors. Its superior strength and good ductility enable it to withstand high stress and resist fracture.
